Users will be able to implant a digital watermark in the pixels of an image, making it undetectable to the human eye yet detectable for identification, using this new tool.

Using Imagen, one of the business's most recent text-to-image models that uses input text to create photorealistic images, SynthID is offered to a small number of Vertex AI users.

"While generative AI has enormous creative potential, it also introduces new hazards, such as allowing artists to intentionally or accidentally transmit incorrect information," Google DeepMind said in a blog post.

"Being able to recognise AI-produced content is crucial for arming individuals with knowledge about when they are interacting with created media and preventing the spread of misinformation," it added.

DeepMind claims that SynthID is unaffected by changes to photographs, such as applying filters, altering their colours, or compressing them.

DeepMind developed two AI models—one for identification and the other for watermarking—in tandem with a "diverse" group of photographs to create the tool.
